JUBAKO. 200 years of Unagi excellence.

You can immediately sense the vintage vibe upon entering the traditional gates of this restaurant specializing in eel (unagi) dishes. Jubako has a 200 year history, and you can definitely feel it. There are only private tatami rooms in this tiny restaurant and the room we were assigned to was particularly charming with views to a lovely little garden. The tatami has a hollow space underneath the table for your feet so don’t worry about getting cramps.

IMG_4376

The first dish as usual as in other unagi restaurants is the inner parts of the eel on a stick. I’m not a big fan of this dish but I have to say that this dish did not have the bitter aftertaste as in other restaurants.

IMG_4379Then came a delicious soup. It tasted very unique, unlike any other soup I’ve tried in Japan. I found out later that the fish in the soup broth was a Koi fish, the kind the Chinese keep in a pond in their garden for good luck. I’ve never tasted Koi fish before. I guess there’s a first time for everything.

IMG_4380

Then came some grilled eel with salt. Unfortunately I can’t post a picture of it because my picture was blurry.

Then, came half an onion. Baked. I couldn’t finish this because it still had the strong onion taste on it, even though i love onions, I could only manage half.

IMG_4385

The main dish was the grilled eel in sweet sauce served with rice and pickles. I loved this. I believe it was the best eel I ever tried. Soft and sweet.

IMG_4386

IMG_4387The dessert was especially lovely. Some red bean ice cream inside deliciously crunchy waffles. You were supposed to eat it like a burger.

IMG_4389

This restaurant is a little on the pricey side. This elaborate meal costs about 20.000 yen per person. They do speak a little english.

SEIYUUZAN YAKINIKU

Its been a busy week for me in terms of over-indulging my taste buds. I’ve been out and about, trying some new restaurants and I’m really excited about sharing this yakiniku restaurant I discovered in Shiodome. I loved it !. Seiyuuzan is located on the 41st floor of the Shiodome City Center building with magnificent views and a warm, rich ambiance. It’s a good place to bring guests and the prices are quite reasonable.

Our first course was a beef tartar called ‘yuke’. I don’t eat raw meat that much and have never been a big fan of any kind of beef tartar but this ‘yuke’ tasted absolutely fresh and delicious.

Then came a crunchy fresh salad.

Followed by the best gyu (tongue) I’ve ever tried. So soft and sumptuous.

IMG_4326I was really impressed by the ox tail soup that came next.

IMG_4328

And the mango sorbet we had for dessert wasn’t just any regular sorbet. Made fresh on our table using liquid nitrogen, this dessert was a spectacle of its own, as you can witness through the series of pictures below.

IMG_4349There you go, my wonderful dining experience at Seiyuuzan. We had the most elaborate course available so the price was over 10.000 yen. But they do have more reasonable courses and even lunch for 2000 yen.

Before I finish, a picture the of the restaurant’s ambiance to give you a feel of the place.

SAZANKA Teppanyaki at Hotel Okura

IMG_4265

“Old school but still cool” would be the perfect sentence to describe this teppanyaki restaurant on the 11th floor of hotel Okura. The interior is vintage as is their food presentation but nevertheless, their teppanyaki is very good and reasonably priced.

There a few set menus to choose from and the prices are about 10.000 yen and over for dinner. Lunch sets are more reasonably priced with about the same amount of food in it. This is what I had…

And of course, the highlight of the evening came to follow. Some lusciously soft red marbled beef. The kind you can only find in Japan.

And to end things on a wonderful garlicky note…some wonderful garlic rice.

As you probably have noticed from the pictures, Sazanka is not big with food presentation. Unlike most Tokyo eateries, they don’t worry that much about how the food looks on your plate. However, the food is delicious and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters, right ?

PIERRE MARCOLINI Chocolatier

IMG_4135

I could not wait to share my newfound haven of chocolate dwellings. Pierre Marcolini is a tiny chocolate shop in one of the back streets of Ginza. I have passed it many times and simply dismissed it as a glamorous little chocolatier you go to when in need of gifts. I had no idea they had a small cafe on the second floor where you could order an array of heavenly chocolate desserts and pastries. Thank God I went in the other day and found the tiny cafe on the second floor.

These are the desserts we tried :

The chocolate gateau

Now this was good but somewhat heavy. I would recommend trying something else like the salty caramel eclair pictured below. This was exquisite.

The salty caramel eclair

The star of the show in my opinion was this Marcolini salty caramel waffle and caramel ice cream. This little waffle was absolutely heavenly, soft on the inside, slightly crunchy on the outside with the perfect amount of sweetness to it. And the sizing was just right. Not too big nor too small.

I can’t wait to go back and try the chocolate eclairs and chocolate fondue. Will update !

ABURA SOBA

Let me introduce you to my new favorite ramen!. I visited their tiny restaurant in Ginza and fell immediately in love. Abura soba’s noodles are different. They might call themselves soba but the noodles are actually from the ramen family and instead of the usual hot broth, they come lathered with different oils and sauces.

IMG_3566

The restaurant only has a 10 seat bar counter so there is usually a line outside but the waiting time is very short. You order your noodles from the machine at the entrance. Of course everything is encrypted in kanji so ask for an english menu, it is available. You have a choice of salty or spicy miso. I love the spicy miso and I add an extra half boiled egg to it. I then mix the noodles until they look like this…

IMG_3569Absolutely delicious !!!.

Abura soba has a few outlets but the one in Ginza is 2 streets behind the Matsuzakaya department store and this is how the facade of the restaurant looks like.

A bowl of noodle with extra egg is about 1000 yen. I am so in loveeeeee….

KEAT’S HOUSE CAFE

IMG_3590

After the endless stream of guests visiting Tokyo over cherry blossom season and nights of extensive dinners, I was so ready for some healthy food. A friend recommended this place called Keat’s House in Yutenji. I haven’t heard about this area not far from Nakameguro until today and thought it fun to do some exploring.

IMG_3592

Named after the famous British poet John Keats , I was expecting a somewhat European decor with maybe a touch of aristocracy but was pleasantly surprised by the old Japanese timber lodge that greeted me in a corner of busy Komazawa-dori. The place had a cozy, rustic feel to it. The front of the cafe had two tables and a bakery.

IMG_3593

The main dining area was at the patio with four rustic wooden tables. I imagine it to be chilly to dine there in the winter even with the portable heaters, but today it was perfect.

IMG_3595

The lunch menu is simple, uncomplicated and very reasonable. A lunch set is around 1.000 yen. Keat’s house is not a vegan restaurant but most of its food are on the healthy side. They have a set menu of brown rice with assorted condiments on the side like some grilled fish or meat with vegetables. I tried the vegetarian bibimbap and it was flavorful.

IMG_3601

My friend tried the eggs benedict.

IMG_3603

What you definitely should not miss are the whole wheat waffles that come with whipped butter and honey. This was absolutely delicious.

IMG_3607

The lovely lady who served us spoke excellent english and suggested that we tried their ‘misukara’ or wheat drink mixed with soy milk.

IMG_3599

The drink had a very ‘interesting’ taste. I’m not sure it would be everyone’s cup of tea but I liked it.

I’ve never been that much into vegetarian and healthy food. I would pick meat over vegetables any day, yet I liked the bibimbap and I loved the waffles, and I loved Keat’s house atmosphere that I will definitely be back for more.

EZO SEAFOOD & OYSTER BAR in NISEKO

I’m going to stray a little in my next few posts to write about some restaurants in Niseko, Hokkaido. I’m here for the weekend and I believe this little ski village has some of the best eateries in all of Japan.I’ve written about Kamimura in my previous posts and today I tried this little seafood place called Ezo Seafood that my friends have been raving about.

2013-03-14 19.22.012013-03-14 19.19.02

As you enter this little wooden restaurant, you are welcomed by a display of mouth-watering fresh seafood. Humongous oysters, vibrant hokkaido crabs and uni, sole fish, rock fish, scallops, asahi clams all await to be devoured in whatever way you choose. Raw, broiled or fried. We decided to leave our meal in the capable hands of James, the chef and owner of Ezo Seafood and this is what we had…

A plate of fresh oysters and super sweet hokkaido crab legs

Now the abalone is a definite must. The butter sauce is sooo good.

This clam soup is also uniquely wonderful. I loved the buttery taste of the broth mixed with fresh onion leaves.

James has asked me to acknowledge Keiko Takaoka, the chef and unseen hands of this plethora of deliciousness and I absolutely agree! . Bravo Maestro !

I have to say, this was one of the best meal I’ve ever had in this country. Everything was so fresh and delicious, especially the abalone with butter sauce and the asahi clam soup. Prices are also very reasonable. All this loveliness costs a mere 23.000 yen for 3 persons (including a large 5000 yen bottle of sake). If you ever find your way to Niseko then this restaurant is a definite must !

REI-KA-SEN

If you ever get hit by a hunger pang while strolling through Shinjuku’s Takashimaya department store and can’t decide what to eat, Rei-ka-sen, a ‘chinese’ restaurant perched on the 13th floor may be an option.

IMG_3298

The interior of the restaurant is clear and bright with a nice view towards the terrace. They are best known for their shark fin noodles ( I know…I know…I really don’t eat shark fin that much). Anyway, they have a choice of shark fin noodle soup, shark fin rice porridge or shark fin i fu mie at a very reasonable price of about 2000 yen.

Other options are the lunch menus which offer a wonderful array of chinese dishes for a reasonable 1260 to 3360 yen. My friend tried one of the lunch menus and this is what she had :

We also decided to try some other dishes like their tan-tan ramen (ramen with sesame broth) and prawn with mayonnaise.

We also tried the almond jelly and mango pudding dessert. Now this you can skip, it wasn’t that good.

Just a reminder, the food in this restaurant is not authentic chinese so don’t go expecting that. Still, it was a pretty good, reasonably priced meal.

HENRI CHARPENTIER : The best mille feuille in town

Ok, I have definitely found the winner for best mille feuille in town and the award goes to Henri Charpentier’s caramel mille feuille stack. Pierre Herme used to hold the prize for the best mille feuille in my book before I stumbled upon this lovely pastry shop in Ginza, but today I pass the award along.

The mille feuille

The mille feuille

Not to mix things up, it is not a mille feuille you buy at the pastry shop but one you have to order from the menu at their cafe in the basement of their Ginza shop. If you get confused, there are pictures in the menu. Just pick the one pictured above. It is so heavenly delicious I am having trouble picking out the words to describe it. I am speechless. The mille feuille combines the perfect amount of crunchiness of the puffs with some lovely hazelnut cream and a touch of caramel syrup. I was so afraid that this is only a seasonal menu, I didn’t even dare ask.

Enough raving about the mille feuille, now we may move on to some more dainty delights that Henri Charpentier has to offer. Although disputed by some, Henri Charpentier, a french chef, was known as the creator of the crepes suzette. Of course, I had to try some. Ordering the crepe suzette here brings a waitress with a trolley who cooks the crepes right in front of you.

IMG_2910

I have never been a fan of crepes suzette (or any dessert that has an orangey taste to it), so my review might be biased. Lets just say, it wasn’t bad.

IMG_2913

Another pastry I found absolutely delectable was their caramel bon-bon.

The caramel bon bon

I am sure all the other mouth-watering pastries on display are absolutely delicious as well.

The pastry display

Well, I’ll just have to go back and find out. The coffee is also good and it is better to pay them a visit in the late afternoon. There are always lines at lunch hour and a little bit after. Around 5 pm would be the perfect time to visit and I will be doing so again very soon. Before I leave, some pictures of their interior and exterior.

Delicious steak at AZUMAN

IMG_2979

I’m so glad I found this Japanese steak house in Azabujuban. I loved everything about it from the minute I walked in for lunch a few days ago. The opulent interior, the relaxed atmosphere, the wonderful service all contributed to an excellent lunch.

The lunch set menu is quite reasonably prized, starting at a little over 5000 yen per person but prices go up at dinner to over 10.000 yen because they serve higher grade wagyu for dinner.

The first course was a delicious cawan mushi (egg custard) with some beef sashimi.

The kind-looking chef that serves at the bar comes to your table to cook your meat to perfection for you. You have a choice of three sauces to pick from.

What I also loved about this restaurant was the fact that the chef was actually excited to see me take pictures of his food, unlike many upscale restaurants in Tokyo who I feel are unnecessarily strict about taking pictures. This chef actually offered to garnish my meat to make my picture more interesting.

One course gets about six lovely chunks of meat followed by some very interesting garlic rice that is served in a soup.
